Austral Bricks La Paloma in Miro

With exquisite attention to detail and unexpected geometric forms, Selbourne reflects the impact of a collaborative builder-architect relationship in creating thoughtful and innovative modern homes. Combining the expertise of Milenko Podnar Architect with Mancini Made’s meticulous approach to luxury modern homes, the project’s flawless execution is evident in every aspect of its design.

Situated in Melbourne’s inner suburbs, the contemporary residence embodies a distinct understanding of its heritage precinct while standing apart from the surrounding architecture. Despite being constructed during the strict lockdown rules of the pandemic, the final home speaks to outstanding originality and attention to detail, maintaining a familiar appeal to the neighbouring masonry period houses.

The material relationship was essential in creating this architectural cohesion. “We wanted to use a very refined brick that expressed a very minimal formality,” says architect Milenko Podnar. “This allowed the design to present itself as a very clear and precise arrangement of rectilinear forms.”

Using simple yet impactful Austral Bricks La Paloma in Miro, the geometric form of the asymmetrical gable roof was able to function within the interwar context of the suburb. The choice also avoided risks of imitating the period architecture, defining the home as its own distinct space. “The biggest advantage of using these bricks was their capacity to belong to a period tradition of masonry dwellings at a particular scale but freed from faux hectorism,” says Milenko.

“This enabled us to create a thoroughly contemporary building that was inherently contextual and part of a broader tradition of brick architecture.” Lending to the monochromatic palette of the remaining home, the bricks established a monolithic form that stayed true to the raked mortar joints and standard bond course work commonly found in Melbourne suburban architecture."

The interiors continue the refined visuality of the home, using bold black accents amidst neutral interiors. Natural stonework and porcelain bring notes from the Brickwork into the kitchens and bathrooms, while the open-plan kitchen provides access to the manicured back garden and pool.

Selbourne pays homage to the structural qualities of suburban homes while transcending ideas of modern residences, displaying a cohesive yet unique contemporary finish.
