Bowral 76 Chillingham White & Bowral 76 Bowral Brown

Treno is a two-stage residential development located in Adelaide’s inner west suburb of Mile End. Designed by architecture and interior design studio, Studio Nine, the first stage of the development includes a mix of three townhouse typologies.

The two and three story homes connect old and new, designed with a conscious understanding of the surrounding heritage. Each typology sits within Mile End’s historic row of cottages and railway buildings. Loosely based upon the Victorian row houses of the adjacent Junction Street, the houses take on the materials, proportions and design language of the area.

Made from either Bowral 76 Chillingham White or Bowral 76 Bowral Brown from Brickworks, their unique granular patina and sharp edges create inherent character and tactile interest.”

In response to the historic neighbourhood, their designs feature multi-layered, high articulated facades that provide daylight yet a mutual privacy between residents. Design elements inspired by the railway are seen throughout such as the slatted vision screens that emulate the texture of the bordering dry-pressed clay brick walls. Made from either Bowral 76 Chillingham White or Bowral 76 Bowral Brown from Brickworks, their unique granular patina and sharp edges create inherent character and tactile interest.

Internally, the natural finishes and bold tones provide a subtle nod to the industrial location. Generous ceiling heights, courtyards and wide corridors also allow for natural light to fill the interiors. Luxury finishes across the development reinforce its boutique cottage nature.

The second stage of the development is set to be completed by September 2025. A mixed-use development of apartments, townhouses and commercial offerings, the key elements of stage one extend to this design. The upper levels will incorporate dramatic white profiled metal cladding to create a discrete ‘veiled’ podium. The colour, material and swept forms of the plinth will continue to hint at the surrounding context.
