About Pool Leber Architects
The interplay between rational structure and poetic expression forms the foundation of the Pool Leber design process, in which knowledge is just as essential as the ability to conceive ideas in new and different ways.
Working on a wide range of projects, from residential and museum buildings to transport infrastructure, across diverse urban, rural and cultural contexts, and for both private and public clients, has shaped, transformed, and broadened Pool Leber's approach to the complex challenges of construction.
Pool Leber draw inspiration and guidance from the existing conditions - the site, the project brief, and the client - to arrive at designs with distinct character that strengthens the locationa and are firmly anchored within it. The balanced, symbiotic integration of technical and spatial design aspects aims to create architectural and urban structure that feel both appropriate and natural.
Isabella, and Pool Leber, view architecture as a creative, integrative process rooted in cultural, social, ecological, and technical responsibility. Isabella Leber first studied music (violoncello) in France, before studying architecture in 1990 in Karlsruhe, which she continued in London, where she acquired her first diploma, the RIBA Part 2.
In 1998 she received a second diploma in Karlsruhe, with a focus on urban planning. After several years abroad in Denmark, she returned to her hometown in Munich, where she initially worked as a freelance architect, mainly working on existing buildings. In 2011 she founded Pool Leber Architects with Martin Pool.
In addition to experimenting with new building materials such as lightweight concrete and vacuum insulation, dealing with and maintaining existing buildings has been an important part of the office's architectural portfolio.
After teaching positions in the architectural heritage course and a guest professorship for building theory at Augsburg University, in 2020 she became full Professor for Building with Existing Structure and Design at the Rhein-Main University in Wiesbaden.

Stephen Varady is an award winning, innovative and respected Australian architect, writer competition advisor and educator. He has designed projects in Australia and overseas, and run some of the most successful architecture competitions in Australia.
Stephen is an architecture writer, photographer and advocate for design excellence, with his writings published extensively in Australia and overseas. Stephen’s projects have also been published in Australia and overseas and included in exhibitions in Berlin in 2007 and the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2008. Stephen has received a number of RAIA awards, the Dulux Colour Award Grand Prix and the Belle House of the Year Award. He was also Creative Director for the 2006 RAIA National Architecture Conference.
Stephen has been an inspiring and enthusiastic lecturer and tutor in architecture, interior design and professional practice since 1985 in architecture and design schools at Sydney University, University of New South Wales, University of Technology Sydney, University of Newcastle and RMIT, and has lectured extensively around the world. Stephen has also been the curator of the Australian and International Brickworks Architecture Speaker Series since 2015.
