Sustainable Construction to Lead the Way in Industrial Development for 2022

As we continue to navigate through our country’s turbulent climate, leaders in the architecture and design industry are forced to review their sustainability initiatives to enforce rapid change for the well-being of our future.

Understanding the longevity of the impacts of built environments on our planet is an important responsibility that we all share. Our design leaders have the power to redefine the built form, in the hopes of easing the burden of our development on the climate, while creating long-lasting architecture that supports daily life today and into the future. While we sometimes associate sustainability and its ongoing development with the latest technology, advanced products, services, and solutions, we often need to look to the past. With its retrospective reflection, we can see how more traditional products and processes can complement innovative design.

That attitude is what takes us to bricks: the ultimate all-round, sustainable solution. For centuries, bricks have played a significant role in the history of architecture, renowned for their robust materiality and timeless style. With more eco-conscious practices front of mind, it’s clear to see that brick is a highly effective solution to guide the way for more contemporary, sustainable construction.

Recent years have seen the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference and the Federal Government’s 2050 net-zero target, each an indicator of the significance of climate considerations in every industry. Australian construction company, Hansen Yuncken notes that industry leaders are pledging to reduce the construction sector’s environmental impact during 2022. A strong focus will be on the industrial construction sector; a rapidly growing area reflecting the 150% year-on-year increase in industrial workload during 2021. This workload is an aftermath of the pandemic’s ‘online shopping boom,’ accelerating the swift growth of industries in the eCommerce and logistics sectors.

This sudden increase has inspired the Australian construction sector to adapt, by evolving ways of thinking inspired by the sustainability conversation. “COVID has certainly influenced clients to think differently in respect to design and user experience of our facilities. We work collaboratively with developers and clients to adopt innovative systems and processes to help facilitate industry-wide use of emerging technologies,” Hansen Yuncken CEO, Peter Salveson notes.

“While there hasn’t been a dramatic change in the look of these buildings, we have observed a very noticeable shift toward more sustainable work practices and environments."

“There is a steady, strong pipeline of industrial projects with facilities ever increasing in size and complexity,” Peter adds. “Our job is to ensure this rise in demand is married with a continued focus on environmentally sustainable practice. Protecting our planet is always front of mind, and we look to deliver that in every project we undertake.”

Although residential dwellings are often inspired by the large-scale developments of commercial design, for sustainable building practices, we can look to developments led by sustainability-focused individuals – those who are willing to experiment and challenge the current landscape of the construction process for inspiration.

At Brickworks, we believe that this boom in industrial construction will play a significant role in evolving the sustainable construction processes already in place.

Our commitment to sustainability is at the core of everything we do. Dedicated to creating products that last forever, Brickworks takes pride in the inherent performance capabilities of brick at every step of the process. To achieve sustainable construction across different sectors, infrastructure needs to start at the base level of selecting the right materials.

In today’s landscape of booming construction and an equally immense responsibility to protect our environment, the benefits of bricks are unparalleled. Looking beyond creative capabilities and endless design solutions, bricks feature an unrivalled sustainable identity – this mainstay of design through eras of style isn’t done yet.
