The Standard Store
After an unceremonious eviction by their landlord last year, the store’s owners, Nicola and Orlando Reindorf decided it was time for something new. This came in the form of their own retail space, stripped back and considerately redesigned by the team at Pattern Studio.
The antidote to the haphazardly assembled retail stores of quasi-fast fashion, The Standard Store’s new space is slower, more deliberate. It offers a reprieve from the bustle of the city to allow for considered and enjoyable browsing. Building upon existing character rather than relying on a demolition, the design team at Pattern Studio transformed the space into a retail oasis, equipped with a peaceful courtyard.
Not one to shy away from colour and texture, The Standard Store’s renovation is refined enough to allow the pieces to do the talking, whilst still being a statement in and of itself. The store’s interior design style is not unlike the clothing pieces they stock: elevated, bold, contemporary and beautiful.
A key focal point of the store is their point of sale counter, built with Austral Bricks Venetian Glass Bricks in Blue Sapphire. The bricks, crafted in Italy are simultaneously structurally sound and aesthetically striking. Expertly, artisanally crafted, they have the ability to imbue any space with an elevated design appeal, creating a feature wherever they are installed. Inspired by the Art Deco influence of the 1920s, these bricks are simple yet decorative, offering a way to integrate colour and texture into a project in a refined way.
Pattern Studio has managed to create a space that is both contemporary, and warmly welcoming. Upon entering the store, you ascend sleek concrete steps, meeting cool charcoal bricks, and then, descending to plush azure carpet. The materiality all exists in unison, each complementing the other to create a textural palette that is a calming, welcome reprieve from the chaos of the city.
Allowing the store itself to do the talking, the furniture and interior styling was kept refined and simple. In keeping with the store’s cool colour palette, a Faye Toogood Lounge Chair sits at the entryway, the perfect spot for a moment’s pause. Perched atop the glass brick counter sits a Henry Wilson Onyx Pillar Lamp. To complement the stunning Blue Sapphire counter, the store was painted a bright white, and the original elements of sandstone were maintained, a nod to the heritage and original architecture of the building.
The Standard Store’s ethos is to ‘stand apart, get local’, championing the best of international design on Australian soil, the store’s penchant for slow fashion, carefully curated collections and quality above all else is paralleled in their new retail store.
