Maitland City Council Building
Located within Maitland’s iconic High Street streetscape, the Maitland City Council Building is a masterful testament to the principles of architectural harmony, historical continuity, and functional excellence. Designed by BVN Architecture, PTW, and EJE, and delivered by Hansen Yuncken, the project responds sensitively to its historic context through a grounded masonry form and a refined architectural language. The project forms part of a masterplan for the site that revitalises the town centre by incorporating the existing 1890 Town Hall and associated 1930’s council buildings.
The project features a light-filled entry lobby that serves as the heart of the public space, designed to be used in conjunction with the historic Maitland Town Hall for events and gatherings. This central space is enhanced by three specially commissioned artworks that reflect the cultural significance of the site. A modern, three-level open-plan office supports activity-based working, offering flexible work areas, meeting rooms, storage, and end-of-trip facilities such as showers and bike storage. The heritage-listed Maitland Town Hall has been carefully refurbished to meet the needs of contemporary users while preserving its historical character. Connecting seamlessly with the new building across both the ground and first floors, accessibility to the Council Chambers is improved and connectivity to upgraded facilities enhanced.

The material palette reinforces a lasting sense of permanence and civic identity, through a considered combination of Bowral Bricks Bowral 76, Austral Bricks San Selmo Smoked, and UrbanStone Natural Stone Pavers. In line with the Council's commitment to sustainability and a 4.5-star NABERS rating, materials were carefully selected for their minimal environmental impact, recyclability, low-VOC, low-toxicity, and ethical supply chain. Designed for longevity, these materials also support long-term emission control. The thermal efficiency of the brick façade ensures a comfortable interior year-round, maintaining a cool environment in summer and warmth during winter.
Expressed through vertical elements that resonate with the surrounding context, the textured masonry screen introduces rhythm, scale, and a clearly defined public forecourt. The use of Bowral Bricks Bowral 76, distinguished by their unique granular patina and tactile aesthetic, brings a refined texture to the façade. Their sharp edges and inherent character are beautifully complemented by the warm, earthy hues of Bowral clay, creating a timeless presence. Paired with the elegant Austral Bricks San Selmo Smoked, these kiln-fired clay bricks offer a sophisticated, tactile surface inspired by the patina of recycled bricks. The result is a rustic, yet refined finish, imbued with a natural warmth that enhances the building’s architectural expression.
