Bowral Bricks in Simmental Silver

Overlooking the Sunshine Coast, this modernist home constructs an inspiring narrative to tie indoors with outdoor environments. Designed by Alexandra Buchanan Architecture, Buderim House accommodates a couple approaching empty nesting, offering moments for intimacy and possibilities of expansion.

Elevated on an escarpment 145 metres above sea level, the home boasts dual views of rugged bushland to the north, enriched by glimpses of suburban patchwork sprawled across the region. The architects were restrained in their approach, allowing the materiality and structural layout of the build to seamlessly coexist with the natural surroundings. Throughout the residence, intimate pockets can be found where the expansive outlooks are thoughtfully framed to immerse the inhabitants in the site’s regional context.

From street-view, the home is tucked away and concealed by a row of trees, enveloped by a stonewall structure for maximum privacy. Inside the property lines, Buderim House takes inspiration from its leafy surroundings, employing a raw, earthy material palette to further ground itself with its context. The silvery-grey hues of the Bowral 76 Simmental Silver masonry, used both externally and internally, is a robust, durable and timeless material that creates a minimal yet engaging backdrop for the inhabitant’s lifestyles. Complemented with elements of warm timber and opulent marble, Buderim House is enriched with a striking tactility and pared-back palette designed to highlight the inherent beauty of the Sunshine Coast, and bring these views to the foreground.

Private and public spheres delicately intertwined in the home’s H-shaped layout. To the east, the main kitchen, dining and living spaces sit alongside each other, housing all the public zones in one area of the house without disrupting the private quarters. Connected by an elongated central courtyard, the bedrooms are gently tucked away on the opposite site of the residence – alluding to a sense of retreat and repose after socialising and conversation in the other wing.

Throughout the build, residents have direct access to the outdoors – deeply immersing Buderim House in the unobstructed views of the coast and the abundance of natural light, allowing the family to bask in the glorious Queensland weather at every corner of the home.
