Mooloolaba Esplanade
Arguably Queensland’s most popular picnic spot, the park and beachfront have been sympathetically designed as a reference to its seafaring history – both past and continued. As one of the busiest seafood ports on the eastern seaboard, Mooloolaba is a haven for coastal devotees, and its bustling esplanade is no exception.
Initially designed by John Mongard Landscape Architects as an ode to its nautical surroundings, the esplanade is largely nestled between First Avenue and Beach Terrace, making full use of the uninterrupted coastal views and providing an innovative, creative and functional way to explore the scenic waterfront.
Designed with a sensitive appreciation for the surrounding landscape, the esplanade caresses the beachside locale with an undulating wave-like profile, paved in hardy, weather-resistant materials supplied by Urbanstone and designed in collaboration with John Mongard Landscape Architects.
“Working on a project such as the Mooloolaba Esplanade meant that UrbanStone was able to collaborate with the landscape architects to come up with a colour scheme and finish for the area that was as unique as the environment into which it was being installed,” says Nick Parry, QLD State Commercial Sales Manager, UrbanStone.
“With around 2500 current mix designs, we were able to successfully create a bespoke colour and finish for the project’s brief, taking inspiration from the waterfront locale and its beachside palette to forge pavers aptly named Rocky Road, Mooloolaba Rock and Mooloolaba Sand, each with a honed surface treatment.”
Laid in a unique pattern, the paved areas speak of the varied and organic surroundings and wind around to join with timber decking dotted throughout, with additional paved areas added as the precinct has expanded and been upgraded in the years since.
The project also includes one of the area’s quirkiest attractions - Loo With a View, designed by Clare Design Architects in 1997. Wrapped in a deck that extends out into the sand as if moulded from the bow of a ship, the local favourite provides both an unrivalled viewing area and is the centre of the esplanade’s Gallery By The Sea. The outdoor gallery houses site specific sculptures, artworks and mosaics that all reference the seaside locale, with some bronze sculptures set into pavers that provide a talking point along the walk.
As an enduring and beloved community destination, the esplanade is constantly, and creatively, evolving with new upgrades and expansions set to begin in 2022.
