Top Colour Trends of 2022

According to experts in the design sphere, calming neutrals and vibrant bright tones will be the colours to watch in 2022.

A simple coat of paint is an easy and cost-effective way to breathe new life into your home. Whilst soft dove-greys, ecru tones and off-whites have been at the helm of paint popularity for years, experts are suggesting that we may see bolder colours come to design frontier in 2022.

Whilst the design goal of many homeowners during the cooler months and throughout the COVID-19 pandemic has been to create a nurturing, comforting space through warm, neutral tones, in the wake of the past two years, experts suggest that we may see a sea change toward bolder, brighter tones. However, these colours needn’t be garish and neon, but rather, there has been a significant focus on exciting and distinct pastels that will sit comfortably alongside natural materiality and existing decor. Uplifting yellow-based tones have been found in the works of key designers such as Yasmine Saleh Ghoniem of YSG Studio and Tamsin Johnson’s European-styled homes.

So, whilst cool greys and sharp whites are staple amongst the design sphere, for the summer months, why not consider something with a warm undertone? An uplifting, summery tone is sure to delight, and bring some joy to your interiors.

With many Australians in lockdown for months at a time, there is a significant pull towards the tones and colours found in nature. Holding its own as a prominent colour in the design sphere, green is continuing to surge in popularity. For the best effect, look for the tones of green that are found in Australia’s landscape; the sage tones of the eucalyptus leaves and the aquas found in our sprawling beaches are a great way to pay homage to our abundant natural beauty. Dulux's Colour and Communication Manager Andrea Lucena-Orr claims,"having spent so much time isolated and on devices, we find ourselves craving authentic connection. In our homes, we desire textured, natural materials that ground us and provide these tactile experiences we've been missing”.

Complementing the natural tones, and perhaps even a nod back to the 70s styling, chocolate tones and warm caramels have been having a comeback in the furniture sphere in recent years, and this has translated into the decor styling world. You only have to look at the top designers and interior styles of 2021 to see that our love for retro design and nostalgic furniture is continuing to grow. With this retrospective design appreciation, comes a fondness for the colours of the era; warm pastels, earthy colours and pops of vibrant tones.

It’s important not to underestimate the power of colour, and how we subconsciously gravitate to different tones depending on our mood and our environment. Colour has the ability to turn a space, mood or outfit from drab to fab, and can transform a room or house with a coat of paint.
