Get the Look, Hamptons Home

Hamptons style homes have had a resurgence in Australian Architecture over the recent years, inspired by the East Coast of the US, the bright and airy homes play with texture and colour in a subtle and earthy way. James Treble, renowned interior design and media personality talks with Brickworks, offering an exclusive ‘get the look’ style video, exploring a range of cohesive palettes of colour, material and finishes.

Moving to the interior decor, dark timber flooring is a great, functional choice to offer a durable finish that is in keeping with the exterior colour palette. In the bedrooms, Treble considers a natural wool carpet for a cosier ambience that is high in texture and echos the finish of the sandstock brick on the front. However, whilst the decor has been neutral and earthy thus far, the bathroom is where pattern can come into play. Patterned floor tiles help create a nautical-inspired theme that is a little bit more glamorous and acts as a feature point of the home.

For the cabinetry, it is important to tie the exterior and the interior together, this can mean using a cool blue-grey or an off-white for the wooden cabinets. Complimenting this feature would be a natural marble on the benchtop. Marble is beautiful and hardwearing, and the veining of the marble mimics the texture of the ocean.

An outdoors alfresco area is perfecting for entertaining and hosting events with loved ones. For this space, a breeze-block offers privacy, shade and a textural element. The GB Masonry Kite Breeze Block in White is the perfect option for this feature, as the highly-glazed finish compliments the glazed finish of the roof tiles.

“For the cabinetry, it is important to tie the exterior and the interior together, this can mean using a cool blue-grey or an off-white for the wooden cabinets.”

The starting point of this project is the facade, and more specifically, the brickwork. For a Hampton’s home, Treble chooses a textural sandstock brick, explaining how “the finish reminds me of driftwood that’s washed up on the shore”. The ashen-greys are a “hard-wearing” option that according to Treble, “will look as good today as it will in years to come”.

Cohesively linking to the facade of the home is the roof. Bristile Roofing’s terracotta roof tiles in Ghost White are in keeping with the neutral colour palette and coastal theme. This option has a glazed surface and the white colourway ensures that it’s an energy-efficient option. With every option Treble chooses, there is a consideration of durability as well as aesthetic, to ensure that the home will be reliable with little future maintenance. Once again, ensuring quality and permanence, Treble recommends a Black Granite from UrbanStone for the driveway, to withstand pedestrian and vehicular foot traffic. Amidst this neutral colour scheme, Treble suggests a pop of colour on the front door. A deep inky blue is a suitable option, paying homage to the colourful depth of the ocean, and the landscape that inspired this style of architecture.
