Nestled in the rolling hills of Orange, NSW, Rosedale Farm is a striking example of how heritage architecture can be reimagined for modern living. Originally built in 1877, the Georgian home has undergone a restorative transformation that breathes new life into the structure while maintaining its historical significance. Steve Cordony, renowned Sydney-based interior stylist and style director-at-large for Belle magazine, has skilfully enhanced the home’s original charm, creating a seamless blend of tradition and contemporary luxury.

For Steve, nature served as a primary inspiration throughout the project. Surrounded by native trees and ever-changing landscapes, Rosedale Farm pays homage to its rural setting, while reflecting a modern sensibility. The original bricks, quarried on-site in 1877, provided the foundation for the restoration. “We kept the original bricks in mind when selecting the Classico San Selmo bricks, ensuring the new additions carried the same sense of history,” Steve explains. The use of classico materials reflects the project’s ethos of honouring the past while enhancing the property for today’s needs.

The success of Rosedale Farm lies in the painstaking selection of every material, ensuring the most remarkable outcome. From the original brickwork to the new rustic-inspired materials, each decision was carefully considered to maintain harmony between old and new. Every element, from the natural stone floors to the terracotta pavers, was chosen for its ability to blend with the surrounding landscape while enhancing the property’s architectural integrity.

Upon entering the gates of Rosedale Farm, guests are immediately transported to a different time. The journey through the property unfolds as visitors explore the meticulously landscaped grounds, including the Orangery, vegetable garden, Petanque court, and English-style gardens, all of which have been thoughtfully designed to reflect the Georgian home’s elegance. The restored architecture, paired with modern outdoor spaces, creates a unique narrative that invites exploration and connection with the surrounding landscape.

“The original bricks used on the property were quarried here in 1877, so we kept this in mind when choosing the Classico San Selmo bricks to carry out the vision.”

Central to the design is the seamless indoor-outdoor flow, a hallmark of contemporary country estates. The connection between the house and garden is harmonious, achieved through the careful alignment of textures and materials. The timber and stone used in the interior transition effortlessly to the external paving and garden paths, creating a unified aesthetic that brings the outdoors in.

The formal garden design, visible from every room in the house, is a testament to the estate’s careful planning. The brick edging adds structure and definition to the garden, complementing the materials chosen for the house. The same San Selmo Classico bricks are used throughout the outdoor entertaining areas, paths, and retaining walls, creating a cohesive design language that ties the property together.

One of the final stages of the project was the transformation of the old hay shed into a stylish Italian Orangery, which now serves as an outdoor kitchen, bathroom, and entertaining space. Set opposite the pool, this final touch completed the vision for Rosedale Farm, blending rustic charm with contemporary luxury and solidifying its place as one of Australia’s most visually captivating country homes.
