The use of brick construction marries with the long history of brick warehouses in this area, and introduces a timeless quality to the building.”
Bathurst 60’s innovative design took out the title of Australia’s tallest brick building with traditional brickwork, laid individually, favoured over brick slips or imitation panels, creating not only a breathtakingly impressive structural shell, but elevating the humble material to superstar status.
What resulted was a truly timeless aesthetic, guaranteeing the distinctive style remains both relevant and revelatory well into the future.
The half brick half glass facade featuring 1.8 metre wide full height, deep-set windows, creates a striking balance of materials and provides ample natural light throughout, while maintaining indispensable privacy in such a densely populated area. Above, the residential tower sings with light, featuring soaring brick columns broken up with front glazed 1.3 metre wide windows that offer a considerate and gentle balance between the contemporary and classical.
Internally, the residential rooms adopt a simple yet timelessly elegant design aesthetic with statement chevron timber flooring, luxury surfaces and expertly crafted joinery taking centre stage. The well-appointed amenities, including a 20 metre infinity-edge pool, gym, yoga room, bar and restaurant, fully accessible to the residents of the private apartments, create a true sense of escapism while maintaining an innate connection to the surrounding city hub.
On the exterior, an inspired brick facade constructed using Bowral Bricks in Simmental Silver, speaks to its urban environment, referencing the distinctive architectural gravitas of the neighbouring milieu. Bathurst 60 is an authentic, intuitive project, combining effortless luxury with an elegant timeless appeal that has acted to reinvigorate and reinterpret the landscape of Sydney’s city centre.
- These distinctive dry pressed bricks made at our Bowral plant have been used in many of Australia’s most admired and historic buildings. With their unique granular patina and tactile aesthetic, Bowral bricks are highly prized by customers, architects and designers alike, and set the standard for design and integrity. Their sharp edges and inherent character combine with the distinctive Bowral clay colours to create what can only be a Bowral Brick. The extensive colour pallete covers the spectrum from the pale and soft Chillingham white and cool silvers through the palette of golds, orange and red hues to the highly sought after Granite and Bowral Blue.
Awarded the project through the City of Sydney’s invited competitive design process, Smart Design Studio’s multi-use hotel and residential design is a striking 27-storey building, comprising five levels of basement car parking, a 5-Star Crowne Plaza hotel complete with function rooms, amenities and food and beverage facilities, and a further 95 premium residential apartments in the tower above.
Formed into four brick blocks, the project’s angular design expertly aligns with the complex site restrictions of its steep foundation. As if floating, the lower portion of the building houses a two storey communal hotel space, while above, the upper tower recedes slightly back, signalling a harmonious, yet significant connection to its surrounding buildings.
