4 Bedrooms That Hero Concrete Block

Concrete block has continued to dominate design trends, beloved for the warmth and character it brings to any space.

At first thought, masonry blocks and bedrooms may seem like an unusual combination. However, when used in thoughtful ways, blockwork has the potential to elevate a bedroom and evoke a real sense of character and warmth. In this article, we’ve rounded up four of our favourite bedrooms that hero concrete block to inspire your next project.

Albury House by Kerstin Thompson Architects

A skilfully restrained palette and considered selection of materials make Albury House an architectural heavyweight. Cool grey masonry blocks comprise the walls of this bedroom, which are juxtaposed by warm timber joinery. The muted colour palette also cleverly allows the variegated grey shades of the masonry to take on a starring role. A sense of tranquillity and quiet luxury is the result of this restraint.

Highbury Grove by Ritz & Ghougassian

The brutalist style of Highbury Grove is perfectly complemented by the grey toned masonry used throughout the interior. Masonry blocks form the foundation of the monochromatic colour scheme, completed by the polished concrete flooring and timber cabinetry. This colour palette is also referenced in the furniture choices, which include a graphite bedframe and black-edged mirror.

Mt Coot-Tha House by Nielsen Jenkins

Designed to be a subtle addition to the forested hillside landscape, the materiality of Mt Coot-Tha House allows the home to blend seamlessly into its surroundings. Speaking to the permanence and durability of the home, the blockwork grounds the bedroom, the repetition of the blockwork creating a calming atmosphere. Opening out to the lush greenery of the courtyard beyond, this bedroom is an inviting oasis.

Sorrento House by David Wilkes Design

Sorrento House showcases blockwork in an elegant and modern fashion. The masonry blocks which are featured as part of the home’s façade are replicated internally through a series of considered feature walls. Thus, the interior and exterior of Sorrento House are closely tied. The masonry feature wall incorporated into the bedroom design makes use of full and half-height blocks in a light porcelain shade. This brighter tone of the masonry blocks  is nicely contrasted by the dark grey polished concrete flooring and charcoal-toned bedframe.
