inDETAIL with Stuart Vokes and Aaron Peters, Vokes and Peters – Sydney
Brickworks is excited for the return of the inDETAIL Speaker Series.
Vokes and Peters' work consciously seeks to reassess cultural practices and contribute to a collective city-making project. They have cultivated an affection for the places they work, an attitude attuned to the inherent beauty of their situation but mindful of uncritical practices exhibited by the contemporary construction industry and property market. Vokes and Peters consider extant settings and human occupancy as productive sources of friction capable of generating memorable and distinctive architectural responses.
While their small-scale and largely private domestic commissions have centred much of their attention on the 'traditional' suburbs of Brisbane's inner city, Vokes and Peters have also completed commercial and public buildings and undertaken residential commissions in regional Queensland, New South Wales, Perth and Sydney.
This event will be hosted by Stephen Varady, architect and collaborator, who shares Brickworks passion for architecture, design and innovation.

Stuart Vokes graduated from Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in 1994. He worked in Brisbane and Germany before founding Owen and Vokes in 2003.
Vokes and Peters was founded in 2015. Both practice directors have taught at the University of Queensland and the Abedian School of Architecture.
In 2023, a collection of essays, Migrations from Memory, was published by Canalside Press, reflecting on the work and ideas of the practice.

Stephen Varady is an award winning, innovative and respected Australian architect, writer competition advisor and educator. He has designed projects in Australia and overseas, and run some of the most successful architecture competitions in Australia.
Stephen is an architecture writer, photographer and advocate for design excellence, with his writings published extensively in Australia and overseas. Stephen’s projects have also been published in Australia and overseas and included in exhibitions in Berlin in 2007 and the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2008. Stephen has received a number of RAIA awards, the Dulux Colour Award Grand Prix and the Belle House of the Year Award. He was also Creative Director for the 2006 RAIA National Architecture Conference.
Stephen has been an inspiring and enthusiastic lecturer and tutor in architecture, interior design and professional practice since 1985 in architecture and design schools at Sydney University, University of New South Wales, University of Technology Sydney, University of Newcastle and RMIT, and has lectured extensively around the world. Stephen has also been the curator of the Australian and International Brickworks Architecture Speaker Series since 2015.
