FOR THE LOVE OF BUILDINGS

Buildings are more than individual objects. They define our streets and neighbourhoods. They reflect and encourage the development of our cities. Buildings provide a home for people that is strongly connected to daily life. When successful, they allow for varied use and appropriation. Buildings carry the stories of a city, holding a physical and layered memory of a place. This is why we need buildings that withstand time, buildings that remain relevant in their usability, beauty, and presence. In our ever-changing world, the best buildings are those firmly rooted in the everyday. The ones that belong to a place.

Office Winhov are building a sustainable future in the existing city. Sometimes this involves creating a new building. More often, it involves reusing existing buildings. For them, sustainability is more than just the conscious use of energy, materials, and the environment. It must also acknowledge the social, economic, cultural agility and resilience a city needs to face in the future. They believe that the most sustainable buildings are built to last while also contributing to the history and character of a city.

As architects, Office Winhov believe in the elegance of simple solutions to solve complex problems. They work closely together with clients and users, in a circular process of listening, questioning, observing and continual design refinement. Their buildings are defined by a careful understanding of context, their rational basis, and Office Winhov's focused attention on materials and design. They strive to balance simplicity with refinement.

FOR THE LOVE OF CRAFTSMANSHIP

Office Winhov was awarded the ARC Oeuvre Award in 2016 and named ‘Architect of the Year’ in 2023 for its work and contribution to the profession. With a team of 25 they work, together with clients and partners, on new construction and the reuse of existing buildings and listed heritage in the Netherlands, Switzerland and Belgium. Their craftsmanship lies in the combination of the artistic, the technical and the professional, in which personal engagement and the ongoing quest for quality and sustainability are paramount.

Office Winhov believe that architecture is more than just realizing buildings. It is a collective and constantly evolving field. Their voice is heard through architectural education and research, and by participating in committees, juries, and editorial boards. They are also the initiators of the platform 'Local Heroes' and the architecture lecture series 'Design-by-thinking-of'. In this way, they connect locally and internationally with the breadth of the profession and our peers.

This event will be hosted by Stephen Varady, architect and collaborator, who shares Brickworks passion for architecture, design and innovation.

We look forward to welcoming you to Brickworks Design Studio Sydney for a night of networking and insightful architecture shared with like-minded people over drinks and canapés.

Jan Peter Wingender Co-Founder & Principal, Office Winhov

Jan Peter Wingender, founding partner of Office Winhov, focuses his work on urban ensembles, residential buildings, civic and public programs and the renovation and redevelopment of existing, often listed buildings. He designs buildings that last for long and considers buildings to be more than single objects; they are part of an environment and contribute to its development. Constantly interrogating the diverse and often complex relationships between a place and a building, the building typology, the application of materials and final use are pivotal to his work.

Jan Peter studied at Eindhoven University of Technology and the Berlage Institute in Amsterdam. He regularly lectures, writes on architecture and is a jury member and guest lecturer at architecture schools in the Netherlands and abroad. From 2003 to 2007, Jan Peter headed the architecture department of the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam. He was a lecturer at the Amsterdam University of the Arts and in 2016 published the book 'Brick, An Exacting Material'.
