Celebrating projects showcasing 10 years of Carbon Neutral Certified Bricks

In the 10 years of Daniel Robertsons Carbon Neutral Brick certification, the brick blocks have been utilised in many award winning projects, continuing to stake their claim on the Australian brick market. With features in Residential, Commercial and Urban Development projects, Carbon Neutral Bricks have become a leading material in the Australian building industry. Proving their success in being a standout product in thermal mass, affordability, reusability, durability, maintenance and energy efficiency. Celebrating this milestone under the Australian Governments National Carbon Offset Standard lends a reflection to projects the bricks have been utulised in.

Nestled atop a grassy knoll in Tasmania's North, Stoney Rise by Cumulus Studio was built as an angular structure, with sloping diagonal features, modern in form and natural in materiality. This was key to the commercial build to create a seamless integration of the natural environment. With a combination of bricks used throughout the build, locally sourced Daniel Robertsons Hawthorn in London, provides thermal protection while also being a resistant and durable material for the harsh environmental conditions of Tasmania. The rough textuality of the Carbon Neutral Bricks reflects the natural landscape surrounding the project. With no two bricks being the same, they create a unique handmade aesthetic, strengthening the raw materiality of the build. The Hawthorn bricks versatility was challenged for this build, while being key to the structural integrity, they also act as a featured wall, shelving units and bench seating. Creating a diverse yet seamless blend of form and function.

Situated on the ‘six-ways’ roundabout in North Fitzroy, Victoria, the residential build pays homage to its heritage 1980’s residence. In keeping with the limitations of the previous build, and regulations, which inherently formed the design of Six-Ways House. With large importance placed on creating a seamless connection between the indoor and outdoor areas, the use of bricks to create this flow also allowed for increased thermal efficiency. Taking inspiration from the surrounding spotted Gum Trees, Kennedy Nolan went for Austral Bricks Indulgence, to reflect the streetscape but also create light within the terrace neighbourhood. The neutral tones bring a sense of presence and privacy, particularly as they move from the exterior through the building, to the north facing garden situated at the back of the property. This aesthetic yet functional brick acts as a thermal conductor for the home, while also reinforcing the durability and privacy.

As a Zero Carbon Sustainable Village, the urban development build, Nightingale Leftfield project showcases mixed-use living, with private residences, communal spaces as well as a commercial area, housing eateries for the surrounding community. As one of six buildings situated in the Nightingale Village in Melbourne's north, Kennedy Nolan’s colour theory blends together with the use of neutral red materiality to create a striking structure. With a Zero Carbon build, the use of the Nubrik Chapel Red, with crisp sharp edges, and a traditional aesthetic, exudes quality and endurance. With formidable durability, invaluable to a multistory urban development, the maintenance and affordability of the bricks allows for large scale build to ensure that the aesthetic is not compromised over time, creating a long standing, durable and reliable structure.

Carbon neutrality in materials allows for certifications on builds, while also effectively changing the material landscape, challenging normality to push for a more sustainable future. Projects utulising these products, specifically bricks, are at the forefront of change, allowing future builds to draw inspiration from the innovative and design driven architectural structures.
