Our Top 10 Brick Feature Walls

From a Frank Lloyd Wright classic to an iconic dwelling aside a castle, we have compiled our top 10 brick feature walls from around the globe.

Ceaselessly popular around the world, and indeed, across the eras, brick feature walls are as pertinent now as they were in the 1950s. From a Vietnamese minimalist home, to a reimagined Brownstone building, we have compiled a list of our top 10 brick feature walls from around the world.

The Design Republic Commune by Neri&Hu

More than a simple feature wall, The Design Republic Commune by Neri&Hu is a full brick compound-esque structure. Each wall of the project is a feature, with the building’s facade eliciting a heritage feel and the courtyard creating a feeling of grandiose with a nod to the Art Deco era.

Aesop Park Slope Store by Frida Escobedo

An architectural marvel, Aesop’s Park Slope store features a full interior brick materiality. The bricks are handcrafted in a geometric sequence. The unique laying pattern is a reimagination of the brownstone design of the homes and buildings in the surrounding urban landscape.

The Termitary House by Tropical Space

Located in balmy Da Nang in Vietnam, The Termitary House by Tropical Space uses a unique hit-and-miss laying pattern to allow light and airflow. The home’s interior consists of a series of brick feature walls. From floor to ceiling, the brick walls alternate between a full brick and hit-and-miss composition, complemented by cool concrete floors and a minimalist design style.

Malcolm Willey House by Frank Lloyd Wright

Renowned for his striking brickwork, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Malcolm Willey House is no exception. With a sleek brick flooring, the feature wall of the living space meets this materiality from floor to ceiling, with a light reprieve of a hit-and-miss laying pattern amongst the full brick.

Sierra Fría House, Mexico City by Esrawe Studio

The home’s facade is the feature of this project. With a refined, simple interior, it is the simplicity of the brickwork, alongside the block-like form, that establish this project as such a success. The earthiness of the brick, with its rich patina creates a truly spectacular finish.

Courtyard Villa in Tangshan, China by ARCHSTUDIO

Whilst brickwork runs from the outside-in within this project, it is perhaps most notably striking in the bedroom. Here, a small courtyard off the bedroom and bathtub creates a moment of shadow play and brightness amidst the building’s brick walls and flooring. Creating a lovely lambency, this laying pattern offers both light and privacy to the dwelling.

Sydney by Telly Theodore

A true cornucopia of refined and natural materiality, Telly Theodore’s Sydney project is a melting pot of timber, concrete, stone and masonry. Most striking though, perhaps, is his rich, charcoal brick feature wall within the home’s living space.

Rabbit Hole House, Gaasbeek by Lens°Ass Architects

Lens°Ass Architects’ Rabbit Hole House is not one, not two, but five buildings located a stone’s throw away from the iconic Gaasbeek Castle. With a uniquely geometric form, the home’s facade and exterior brick wall are at one uniformly linear and rich in textural pattern.

Highgate House, London by Carmody Groarke

The brick exterior of Highgate House is clad in a rich, earthy brown, with a hit-and-miss laying pattern working vertically alongside the home’s entryway. With a quasi-brutalist form, the home’s facade acts as a key feature of the project, with the laying pattern offering a unique cut-through alongside the full-brick materiality.

Merri Creek House, WOWOWA

A uniquely curved feature wall cemented this home as the winner of the Brickworks Materiality Award in 2020. Merri Creek House by WOWOWA demonstrates the design capability of brick through its sculpted walls and elliptical form.
