Project Alston

Stunningly structured, contemporary and architecturally defined by the masonry façade, Project Alston is a carefully considered response to the heritage site on which it exists. Solving the issue of how modernity and traditionality can coexist using colour, shape and GB Masonry, the project masterfully balances light, discretion and respect to the heritage streetscape.

Designed in collaboration with Ian Browne, DKO and Arli Homes, Project Alston oozes contemporary living. Sky-lit spaces and expanses of greenery surrounding the home fleshes out its communion with the natural environment. GB Masonry Arcadia in Desert Sunrise was selected as the hero product, adding depth and texture through its earthy tone and warmth. Carrying through the outside to the in, it bridges a connection and anchors the home to the landscape while also nodding to its heritage character.
Sun-soaked rooms lead out to private gardens, creating an atmosphere that feels larger than its 27 square feet. Bedrooms are tucked from public viewing creating a sense of sanctuary. The intention that the house feels open while outwardly private, aided by the endless sight of greenery in every direction, establishes a serene and reserved home experience.
“Project Alston oozes contemporary living. Sky-lit spaces and expanses of greenery surrounding the home fleshes out its communion with the natural environment.”
Maximisation of light and connection to the outer landscape while also creating a private and secure family home was at the forefront of design, shares Lead Designer Ian Browne. This was a challenge for the project, as it needed to work on ‘a complex site with angled boundaries and heritage overlays, so there was a big focus on getting the layout and massing just right.’ Arli Home’s Sharon Calleja notes that it was important for the design to tell a story through the chosen GB Masonry in Arcadia Sunrise, which flows through the inside and outside of the home. ‘Its natural variations and sawn-face texture add incredible richness and depth, catching the light beautifully throughout the day and giving the entire home a warm, grounded presence.’
Project Alston is a captivating example of dualities in modern living spaces, where openness exists in harmony with privacy. Coalescing the historical integrity of the neighbourhood with contemporary charm, Project Alston creates a serene and intimately immersive atmosphere.
Designed to emulate the natural gradients and delicate colour variations found in Australia’s elemental make up, the mottled colours and subtle earthy texture of the Arcadia are a true testament to GB Masonry’s commitment to contemporary Australian design.
