Nubrik Acland Cream

Kanooka House, designed in collaboration between Knight Office and Dan Wilson, offers a masterclass in reinventing the suburban housing mold. Crafted in dialogue with the surrounding mid-century homes, Kanooka retains the trademark inviting suburban charm whilst integrating contemporary comforts. Nubrik’s Acland Cream brick plays a pivotal role in the home’s identity, emitting a warm, rich palette that harmonises with the neighbouring homes and local coastal landscape to deliver a sense of longevity and belonging.

The hallmark mid-century aesthetic is engrained throughout every aspect of the design. From the fenceless front garden design to the concrete strip driveway and brickwork façade of the property, Knight Office and Dan Wilson have thoughtfully retained iconic aspects of mid-century design that contribute to the home’s charm, whilst seamlessly blending in contemporary touches for timeless yet modern, comfortable living. Open planned indoor-outdoor living spaces encourage cross-ventilation and allow light to permeate the central family zones. Further modern elements to improve the home's sustainability include the addition of solar panels, environmentally durable materiality, and rain chains, creating a home that responds thoughtfully to the environmental challenges of the region and is built for longevity.

“The use of brickwork is a deliberate reference to the existing architecture of the neighbourhood. It allows the home to sit comfortably in its context, while also providing a robust and durable base to the building.”

Nubrick’s Acland Cream brick was not only used for its mid-century aesthetic appeal, yet also for the inherent benefits the materiality offers the home. With a high level of durability, brick was a considered choice to withstand the harsh environmental conditions of the bushfire prone zone, whilst also providing a low-maintenance, long-lasting solution. Furthermore, the brick’s high thermal mass contributes to the energy efficiency of the project, regulating internal temperatures in both the high heat of summer and cooler winter months.

As Dan Wilson notes, “The use of brickwork is a deliberate reference to the existing architecture of the neighbourhood. It allows the home to sit comfortably in its context, while also providing a robust and durable base to the building.”

The soft yet warm palette of the bricks, combined with the pressed face textures, complements the tonal hues of the surrounding native plants, grounding the home in harmony with its context and reinforcing its low-maintenance, nostalgic material language.
