The Cobar Early Learning Centre, designed by architects DunnHillam, exemplifies dynamic, community-led design. Shortlisted in the NSW Architecture Awards for Sustainability, the Centre provides an optimal learning environment for the local children of the remote town of Cobar, incorporating both indoor and outdoor elements to meet the demands of the community and climate.

Curated as a response to the harsh weather conditions of the Cobar environment, the brick-lined exterior of the building provides a shelter for the students from the extreme climate of the region. The durability and high thermal mass of brick utilised throughout the design of the build acts to protect the interior environment, not only providing enhanced temperature regulation but also longevity in the materials’ endurance against environmental pressures.

Incorporating a mix of 50-50 blend of Austral Bricks Sculptured Sands Ochre and Bowral Bricks’ Bowral 76 in Capitol Red and Austral Bricks Specialty Royal, the selection of bricks pairs cohesively with the warm, earthy tones of the surrounding landscape. The geometric patterns of the brickwork define the entryway of the building, warmly inviting students into the protected interior.

Curated as a response to the harsh weather conditions of the Cobar environment, the brick-lined exterior of the building provides a shelter for the students from the extreme climate of the outdoors.

The design of the building was thoroughly considered by DunnHillam to provide a multi-functional space, meeting a myriad of requirements for this remote community. Primarily functioning as an early learning centre, the layout of the building, including classrooms, offices, and various amenities, centres around an interior landscaped courtyard to ensure sheltered play for the children.

The thoughtfully arranged interiors mean that the Centre not only serves as an early learning and play centre for children, however is purpose built to operate as a gathering space for community members.

Deeply considerate of context and the requirements of the local community, DunnHillam through the Cobar Early Learning Centre have not only curated a space that is purpose-built for wider community use, however, is also crafted for permanence with enduring materiality chosen to withstand the harsh climate conditions of the region.
