Located in Ivanhoe, Victoria, Boulevard House by Albert Mo Architects serves as an interplay between architecture and landscape, embracing its local surroundings of the adjacent nature reserve and golf course.

The home unfolds through two distinct pavilions – a single-story black volume and a more compact, double-story white volume. Designed as the adult retreat, the black volume exudes a seductive yet modernist character. At the heart of the design is a central circulation spine that intentionally blurs the interior and exterior spaces to further enhance the seamless transition between nature and the built environment. The home’s axis fosters a sense of movement, whilst expansive sliding doors invite light and air deep into the interiors, further reinforcing the connection to nature.

“Brickworks brings quality and handmade craftsmanship to an otherwise contemporary architecture. Contemporary colours, long slimline shape, and the lustrous sawn face finish combine to create a distinctive style and modern flair.”

Affectionately referred to as the “treehouse”, the latter appears as a gable roof form reminiscent of a children’s drawing to provide a playful and intimate space for the family’s three children. With a round portal and open staircase, the encircling treetops filter in a playful combination of natural light and shadows.

Materiality plays an integral role in shaping the house’s identity. The black pavilion is crafted from GB Veneer Sawn Face in Pewter. Its bold presence is softened by the fluid form of the generous glazing that frames uninterrupted views of the landscape. In contrast, the treehouse features a block screen made from GB Veneer Sawn Face in Porcelain, providing a muted tone that allows for both natural light and the privacy and dynamic play of shadows throughout the day.

Here, Brickworks brings quality and handmade craftsmanship to an otherwise contemporary architecture. Contemporary colours, long slimline shape, and the lustrous sawn face finish combine to create a distinctive style and modern flair.
