Wilderness School Early Learning Centre
At the Wilderness School Early Learning Centre, Grieve Gillett Architects have crafted more than just a classroom. By utilising the marbled textures of Nubrik and the structural elegance of UrbanStone, they have created a 'piazza' - a communal anchor where heritage and modern pedagogy meet.
In the design of early learning environments, the architecture itself acts as a teacher. For the Wilderness School, the challenge was to create a space that fosters a sense of belonging while bridging the gap between the school's established history and its future-focused curriculum.
The result is a light-filled, tactile sanctuary centered around a central "piazza". This concept, rooted in the idea of the village square, serves as a place for coming together, sharing values, and building the foundations of community from the ground up.
To achieve a look that feels both contemporary and deeply connected to the earth, the design team selected Nubrik Australis in Murray Sunset. Manufactured at the Brickworks Wollert plant, this Australian-made pressed brick is celebrated for its timeless, subtle marbling.
The Murray Sunset palette allows the clay to mimic the organic variations of natural rock. These distinctive, multi-coloured tones provide a soft, sophisticated backdrop that avoids the monotony of a single-hue wall. Instead, the brickwork offers a rhythmic play of light and shadow, grounding the new Early Learning Centre within its leafy suburban context.

The transition from the built form to the outdoor play and gathering spaces is handled with equal care. To define the landscape, a sophisticated mix of UrbanStone pavers was employed, featuring Milled River Topaz and Estuary Grey.
These selections do more than just provide a durable surface; they create and 'aspirational design' that guides students through the site. The cool, muted tones of Estuary Grey provide a crisp contrast to the warmth of the Murray Sunset brickwork, while the River Topaz adds a textural depth that helps tell a meaningful story of the South Australian landscape.
By choosing Nubrik and UrbanStone, Grieve Gillett Architects have ensured that the Wilderness School Early Learning Centre is built to last for generations of learners. The durability of high-quality clay and stone masonry ensures that the "piazza" will remain a vibrant, low-maintenance hub to decades to come.
The project stands as a testament to how traditional materials, when used with modern architectural intent, can create spaces that are not only functional but emotionally resonant - offering the youngest members of the Wilderness community a beautiful place to call home.
