Clubbe Hall: A Case Study in Heritage Roof Restoration
Built in 1963, Clubbe Hall is set within the grounds of Frensham School in Mittagong – the scenic gateway to New South Wales’ beautiful Southern Highlands. Designed by Keith Cottier of Allen Jack+Cottier in celebration of the school's fiftieth anniversary, the building serves to honour founder Winifred West’s best friend and co-founder, Phyllis Clubbe. Awarded the 1967 Blackett Award, Clubbe Hall bought Allen Jack+Cottier public and professional acclaim.
Almost 60 years later, this iconic building was carefully restored by heritage architects, TKD Architects. Enlisting the help of Bristile Roofing, the La Escandella tiles in the Curvado profile were recommended for the restoration of the heritage roof. Emulating the existing Spanish Mission style of Clubbe Hall, Bristile Roofing supplied a beautiful array of traditional colourways, Bourgogne, Roja and Marron.

Beyond aesthetics, durability and longevity were also key considerations for TKD Architects whose goal was to preserve the existing building for generations to come. The result is a striking new roof that serves to inspire and support future generations to come. Reflecting this outstanding craftsmanship and innovation, Clubbe Hall was submitted to the 2025 Think Brick Awards under the Robin Dods Roof Tile Excellence category. Named after renowned architect, Robin S. Dods, the category rewards the use of terracotta roof tiles and recognises the contribution of architects, builders, roof tilers and manufacturers in that process.
