Buildings bound three sides of a green courtyard in this inner-Brisbane primary school. A new library and classrooms respect the site’s heritage-protected red-brick church while reinterpreting its form and materials in a contemporary manner.
The new buildings integrate with the central gardens and offer shaded arcades, cloisters and generous undercover gathering spaces for learning and play.
The modularity inherent in brickwork was used to create brick screens that allow ventilation and light while maintaining privacy. This flexibility also allowed the design and detailing of other architectural elements such as folded walls, balustrading and ledge seats.
Although brick was almost a “given” for its relationship to the existing heritage fabric, the project architect Jaime Weber also praised its “economy, flexibility of detail, robustness, expressiveness and natural warmth.”
Bricks are tactile and textural yet safe to touch, an important consideration for young hands. Clay paving helps link and draw together the revitalised school campus.
