THE WRITING’S ON THE WALL
An extension to a former Victorian-era corner store in inner Melbourne presents a friendly face to this busy neighbourhood, thanks to a meeting of artistic imagination with the structural modularity of clay bricks. The greeting HELLO is spelled out in letters over three metres high that stretch down the side street. Artist Rose Nolan worked with the owners and Oof! architecture on the design.
The cavity wall is built in Bowral Bricks Charolais Cream dry-pressed clay bricks laid is a Flemish bond pattern with projecting headers (brick ends) framing the lettering and patterning the background. The brick face is displayed internally as well as to the street. A slit window sits within the final letter, allowing uninterrupted views from inside the house down an adjacent alley to the distant MCG light towers. As this time-lapse video shows, the projecting bricks create an ever-changing light play as the sun crosses the sky.
