An open “civic heart” is the welcoming centrepiece of the first stage of a new secondary campus in the south-west of WA. The complex of three buildings provides comprehensive facilities for the initial intake of Years 7 to 9. Brickwork is the dominant cladding material.

The main colour, Austral Bricks Western Earth in Cascade, is accented with two darker bricks, including Austral Bricks Elements Zinc. “We see brick as the material that anchors the buildings, complemented or highlighted or countered by the other materials such as coloured steel and plywood used in some walls and ceilings,” says architect Emma Williamson of CODA Studio.

The ground level walkways are also brick paved, creating a continuous pathway between inside and out, and reinforcing the warmth and commonality of the material palette.

Bunbury Catholic College Mercy Campus was the joint winner of the Horbury Hunt Commercial Award in the 2015 Think Brick Awards.
