Brickworks is excited for the return of the inDETAIL Speaker Series.
Neeson Murcutt Neille’s work has been recognised locally and internationally through awards, publications, lectures, and exhibitions. This includes representation at the 2006, 2008, 2016 and 2021 Venice Biennales. Their work has received the highest AIA Awards at national level, including the Robin Boyd Award for the best residential project in Australia – Castlecrag House, 2011, the Walter Burley Griffin Award for Urban Design – Prince Alfred Park and Pool, 2014, National Awards for Public Architecture – Prince Alfred Park and Pool and the Juanita Nielsen Community Centre, Heritage Architecture –Juanita Nielsen Community Centre and Residential Architecture – Zac’s House and Whale Beach House. In 2022, Houses Awards, Alterations & Addition over 200m2 Winner – Armadale House, and AIA VIC Award for Residential Architecture – Armadale House.
Neeson Murcutt Neille received the 2021 NSW Architecture Medallion for the Australian Museum (completed with COX Architecture), The John Verge Award for Interior Architecture (2021, 2017), the Greenway Award for Heritage Architecture (2021, 2017), the William E Kemp Award for Educational Architecture (2021), the Sulman Award for Public Architecture (2016, 2014), the Wilkinson Award for Residential Architecture (2009, 2007) and the Lloyd Rees Award for Urban Design (2014).
Neeson Murcutt Neille’s work is articulated in the 2022 publication, Neeson Murcutt Neille: Setting Architecture. Rachel Neeson & Stephen Neille were invited as subject of the second title in the Editions: Australian Architecture Monographs series – an ongoing collaboration between Thames & Hudson Australia and RMIT University’s School of Architecture & Urban Design.
This event will be hosted by Stephen Varady, architect and collaborator, who shares Brickworks passion for architecture, design and innovation.

Rachel Neeson is co-founder and director of Neeson Murcutt Neille, an award-winning architecture practice in Sydney. With over 35 years’ experience, Rachel is recognised as one of Australia’s leading architects. In 2022, Rachel was the recipient of the Marion Mahony Griffin Prize that acknowledges the significant contribution of women to the architectural profession. In 2021, she was awarded a Life Fellowship, the highest honour class of Australian Institute of Architects membership.
Rachel graduated from University of Sydney and awarded the University Medal. In 2002, awarded the Board of Architects Byera Hadley Travelling Scholarship and completed a Master of Architecture in Barcelona. She is currently Professor of Practice at the University of New South Wales, a member of the City of Sydney Design Advisory Panel, and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects.
Rachel continues to produce a diverse and compelling body of work across Australia from bespoke houses, multi-unit housing, housing prototypes, public, community and cultural centres, sports facilities and schools, and adaptive reuse environments.

Stephen Varady is an innovative and respected Australian architect, designer, writer and educator. Born in Sydney, he received a Bachelor of Architecture degree with honours from the University of New South Wales in 1987, and a Masters of Architecture degree from RMIT University in Melbourne in 2002. He is a registered architect in NSW and a member of the Australian Institute of Architects and was appointed Creative Director of 2006 RAIA National Conference.
Stephen has been a lecturer and design teacher since 1985 in architecture and design schools at Sydney University, University of NSW, UTS, Newcastle University and at RMIT University in Melbourne, and has lectured extensively around the world. Stephen is also an architecture critic, writer and photographer, with writings published in Architecture Australia, Monument, ar, inside and the Sydney Morning Herald in Australia, as well as AD and World Architecture in the UK.
Stephen has been principal of Stephen Varady Architecture since 1987.
Between 2008 and 2013 he also worked with Kann Finch, first in the UAE and then in Sydney as Senior Design Architect.
Stephen Varady is a practicing registered architect with over 30 years of experience, and is now also Director of Stephen Varady Associates, a practice for Architecture, Design, Consulting and Special Projects.
Stephen Varady has received a number of awards from the Royal Australian Institute of Architects, the Belle House of the Year Award, a number of Dulux Colour Awards including the 2006 Dulux Colour Award Grand Prix, and 2nd Prize in the NSW Government sponsored Circular Quay Urban Design Ideas Competition.
Stephen’s projects have been published in books and magazines in Australia, the UK, Germany, Hungary, Spain, South Korea, China and the USA. His work has been exhibited in a number of exhibitions including ‘Living the Modern_Australian Architecture’ at the DAZ in Berlin in 2007, and in the ‘Abundant’ exhibition in the Australian Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2008.
Stephen Varady also has success as a competition advisor, registrar and organiser, having prepared and run the Frankston Station Design Competition for the Victorian Government, the Green Square Aquatic Centre Competition and the Green Square Library & Plaza Competition for the City of Sydney, and the Wagga Wagga Civic Centre Competition for Wagga Wagga City Council.
