Brick Wonders: 5 Incredible Brick Homes

The humble brick home is a quintessentially Australian, an icon of the post-war era, which still lives on today as a symbol of suburban living. Whilst you may not look too favourably on the traditional red brick home with its basic pitched roof and lack of originality, here we want to showcase Aussie brick homes that are nothing short of extraordinary.

Rob Brown, the architect of an impressive coastal residence in northern Sydney, says Italian bricks are key to the building’s success. Over a period of several years, Rob Brown and his clients painstakingly conceptualised a house that complemented the headland’s rugged cliffs and respected the site’s topography and natural features. The resulting building comprises a series of stepped, staggered and linked pavilions, each clad in distinctive dark-hued San Selmo Corso bricks from Brickworks. The bricks, which are handmade in Venice, are longer and skinnier than their Australian counterparts, lending the Avalon residence a distinctive European look.

Builder: SJ Reynolds Constructions

Challenging the vernacular of Queensland suburbia, Vokes & Peters reimagined coastal living to create a compact yet spacious family home that invites natural light and the sound of the sea. Selecting brick as the principle material, Stuart Vokes says the materiality was chosen for its authenticity and handcrafted nature.  “Brickwork was selected not as a suburban motif, but as a perfect material for making walls in the garden,” he says. Bricks were also chosen for the central void, being a ‘noble material worthy of receiving sunlight’. Using Bowral 76 bricks in Chillingham White, the pale colour of the brick absorbs light, creating a bright and light-filled interior. Fixed timber screens were added to complement the brick, as well as for privacy and security, allowing the family to leave windows open and listen to the sound of the ocean as they sleep.

Located in Melbourne’s Fitzroy North, The Garden Room House by Clare Cousins Architecture is characterized by a central courtyard that is visible from various interior viewpoints, encouraging meaningful relationships between the garden and the young family residents. Favouring bricks for their longevity, versatility and low maintenance qualities, Clare Cousins selected two shades of Bowral Bricks which were placed in a traditional stack bond pattern. “We like to use robust, versatile materials that can be used internally, externally and for walls and floors – bricks are perfect for this,” Clare Cousins said.

Product: Bowral50 Chillingham White & Austral Bricks La Paloma Gaudi 50mm

Office 88 used brick to create a clean and contemporary home that appeals to the present day aesthetic. Located in a newly established suburban neighbourhood in Sydney, Office 88 created a calm and serene atmosphere through the brick materiality, and a monochromatic colour palette. Using Bowral Bricks Bowral50 in Chillingham White for the facade, the architects achieved a modern look enhanced by the contrasting black accents created with Austral Bricks La Paloma Gaudi 50mm. The OP9 house is a fresh take on the traditional brick home, proving that brick homes are far from just a thing of the past.
